How to Take the Perfect Photo for Your Custom Car Art
Published: July 2026 | Last updated: July 2026
The quality of your custom car artwork depends entirely on the photo you send us. Our human artist draws from your reference image — so a good photo means a great drawing. The good news? You don't need a professional camera. Your phone is more than enough. Here's how to get the perfect shot.
1. The three-quarter angle is king
We've drawn nearly 1,000 custom artworks at Draw My Ride, and the three-quarter front angle consistently produces the best results. Stand at about 45 degrees to the front of the car — so you can see the front and one side. This angle shows the most detail, captures the car's character, and gives the artist the most to work with.
That said, we can draw from any angle. Front-on, rear, side profile — they all work. But if you have a choice, go three-quarter.
2. Good lighting, no filters
Lighting is everything. You want even, natural light that shows the true colour of the car. Overcast days are actually ideal — the clouds act as a giant softbox, eliminating harsh reflections and shadows. Avoid shooting into the sun, and avoid heavy shadows across the car.
And please — no filters. Instagram looks aren't what we need. We want the raw, true-to-life colours so the artist can match your car's exact paint colour. Filters alter the colours and make it harder to get an accurate result.
3. Include the whole vehicle
This sounds obvious, but it's the most common mistake. Make sure the entire car is in the frame — bumper to bumper, tyre to tyre. If part of the car is cut off, the artist can't draw what they can't see. Step back, or use your phone's wide-angle mode if needed (but watch out for distortion at the edges).
4. Fill the frame
Get as close as you can while still capturing the whole car. A photo where the car fills 80% of the frame is infinitely better than one where it's a tiny speck in the middle of a car park. Walk closer, zoom slightly (but not too much — digital zoom degrades quality), and fill that frame.
5. Take multiple photos
You can upload multiple photos with your order — and we encourage it. Take one from the three-quarter angle, one from the side, one from the front, and a few close-ups of details (badges, wheels, lights, mirrors). These extra photos help the artist capture the little things that make your car unique.
6. Clean the car
A quick wash makes a huge difference. Dirt, dust, and water spots can confuse the reference photo and make the artwork look muddy. Five minutes with a sponge and you'll have a cleaner photo — and a cleaner drawing.
7. Watch the background
If you've chosen a custom background for your artwork, try to take the photo with the desired background behind the car. If that's not possible, just let us know in the order notes what background you'd like. Otherwise, the artist will use the background from your photo.
8. Avoid reflections
If you're shooting on a sunny day, watch for harsh reflections on the paintwork. A polarising filter helps, but simply moving around the car until the reflections are minimal works too. The goal is to see the paint colour, not the sky reflected in the bonnet.
